The coffee from Hacienda La Amistad is exceptional—not only in the cup, but in the story behind it. Owned and operated by third-generation coffee farmer Roberto Montero, this Costa Rican estate embodies a legacy of environmental stewardship and community care.

Remarkably, 97% of the land first acquired by Roberto’s grandfather in the early 1900s has been preserved as forest. Of the original 10,000 hectares, 6,000 were donated back to the Costa Rican government to become part of La Amistad International Park—the largest natural reserve in Central America. On the 4,000 hectares that remain, 300 are devoted to certified organic coffee cultivation, while the rest continues to thrive as protected forest, rich with biodiversity.

Roberto’s dedication extends beyond sustainable agriculture. La Amistad lies near the Panamanian border, drawing indigenous families who migrate seasonally for the coffee harvest. In response, Roberto provides safe housing and free medical care to seasonal pickers and their families. His farm also supports over 100 full-time employees from the nearby town of Las Mellizas, offering year-round work in both coffee production and his complementary dried fruit business.

Each year, Roberto hosts an employee celebration to honor the team’s hard work and distributes school supplies to their children—ensuring La Amistad’s impact is felt far beyond the harvest.

At Hacienda La Amistad, sustainability, quality, and humanity grow hand in hand.
