Geisha – or Gesha coffee is a rare and highly valued variety of heirloom coffee that belongs to the Arabica species. It originated in Ethiopia nearly a century ago and became famous after being introduced and adapted in Panama. It gained worldwide recognition in 2004, after winning the quality competition in Best of Panama, and recently fetching the highest price ever awarded to any coffee, which was $6,034/lb in 2023. This wonderful coffee has now spread throughout the coffee-growing regions of Central and South America. So, what makes this coffee so special? The beans are carefully cultivated at high altitudes, resulting in a complex, multi-layered flavor profile that includes delicate floral and fruit notes, as well as a tea-like character.
